Notes Millésime - Pegau

A great, very spicy vintage with very dark garnet hues. Characterized by overripe aromas (brandy, black fruit), they generally have an alcohol/tannin balance that makes them, if not greedy, at least rich and powerful, deep.

“Notably more youthful and lively than either the Reservee or Cuvee Laurence, the 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo offers a massive, full-bodied and decadent profile to go with ripe, full-throttle notes of cassis, licorice, roasted herbs, Asian spice and garrigue. The first vintage of this tiny production cuvee and coming all from the old vines of La Crau and mostly rolled pebble soils, it's just now at the early stages of maturity and has plenty of life ahead of it. Nevertheless, there's absolutely no harm in opening bottles today.”

Notes Millésime - Pegau

The ruby-red, garnet-red 2000 Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds are characterized by a nose of red fruits (raspberry jam) and cherries in brandy, demonstrating the great quality of this vintage, which is part of a series of four very fine years. Notes of thyme and rosemary round out these wines, with their round attack and softened tannins, which remain on the fruit while evolving slightly towards gamey expressions. The finish reveals animal notes (leather) and ripe fruit (prune). On the palate, the wines have a strong tannic structure: they are wines for laying down.

“The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo is a monument to old vine Grenache as well as traditionally made Chateauneuf du Pape. Boasting a natural alcohol of 16%, this wine, which was bottled in spring, 2003 because its fermentation was extremely slow, has virtually everything you could ever want in a profound Chateauneuf du Pape. The color is inky/ruby/purple to the rim. The extraordinary nose reveals aromas of kirsch liqueur, new saddle leather, animal fur, Provencal herbs, spice box, licorice, and a salty sea breeze character. On the palate, the wine is enormous, with an unctuosity, thickness, and purity that must be tasted to be believed. Over 95% of this offering is old vine Grenache, and the rest a field blend of ancient vines. Representing the essence of Chateauneuf du Pape, it possesses so much concentration that it is easy to pose the question ... “where's the tannin?” Analytically, it has very high levels of tannin, but the tannin is barely noticeable given the wine's exaggerated wealth of richness and power. This is a modern day legend in the making, and despite its precociousness and ease in smelling and consuming, it will not hit its prime for another decade. It should last for 25-30 years, and take its place among some of the greatest Chateauneuf du Papes ever made. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030+”

Notes Millésime - Pegau

The 2003 vintage at Châteauneuf-du-Pape was characterized by extreme weather conditions, marked by severe drought and scorching temperatures. This exceptional year led to a very early harvest, starting as early as the second half of August for some grape varieties. Despite these conditions, the grapes ripened optimally, producing a healthy, concentrated harvest. Red wines show intense color, richness, ripe tannins and high aromatic concentration, combining fresh fruit and jammy notes. As for the white wines, they offer fine balance, combining freshness and fullness, with fruity aromas. This extraordinary vintage produces powerful, generous and elegant wines, marked by great maturity.

“For the fourth time, the Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo has been produced, and for the fourth time, it has received a perfect score although I might back off the 2000’s perfect score based on the fact that it seems to be more of an upper-ninety point wine than pure perfection these days. The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo has distanced itself ever so slightly from the 2003 Cuvee Reservee. Before bottling and immediately after bottling, these two wines’ differences were not as evident. At present the Capo reveals that extra level of flavor, power, complexity and richness. It is a big wine (16.1% alcohol - less than in the 1998, but more than in the 2000 and 2007) boasting a dark plum/garnet color as well as a stunning bouquet of aged beef intermixed with pepper, herbes de Provence, and steak au poivre. This unctuously textured, full-bodied Chateauneuf possesses enormous body, huge flavors and sweet, velvety tannins. Still youthful, it has not yet begun to close down, and I'm not sure it will ever given this unusual vintage. It is a modern day classic that should continue to provide provocative as well as compelling drinking for 20-30+ years.”

Notes Millésime - Pegau

The 2007 vintage at Châteauneuf-du-Pape was characterized by an exceptionally dry, sunny and windy summer, providing ideal conditions for healthy ripening of the grapes. The very low rainfall, combined with the Mistral wind, ensured a particularly clean harvest, with little sorting required. This vintage produced beautifully colored wines with good aromatic balance, combining freshness, purity of fruit, structure, richness and roundness. Quantitatively, the harvest was slightly above average, confirming a year of both quality and generosity.

100 / 100 - Wine Advocate (Robert Parker)

“A deeper, richer version of the Cuvee Reservee, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo is one of the more youthful, concentrated wines of the vintage. Coming primarily from the la Crau lieu-dit and over 90% Grenache, aged in an old foudre, its deep ruby color is followed by a bonafide smorgasbord of Provencal aromas and flavors of garrigue, cured meats, incense, beef blood, black currants and pepper. While a full-bodied, incredibly concentrated, rich and unctuous wine, it carries its wealth of fruit and mid-palate density with incredible elegance and purity, with a seamless texture, no hard edges and a finish that won't quit. The 2007 is more elegant and seamless than both the 1998 and 2003, with an incredible sweetness of tannin. Nevertheless, it still needs another 2-4 years of bottle age and will blow your mind over the following 10-15 years.”

Notes Millésime - Pegau

The 2010 vintage will be remembered as one of the lowest in terms of volume produced, and one of the highest in terms of the quality of the grapes harvested. A rainy spring and dry summer produced extremely healthy grapes with a fine tannic structure. The red wines boast deep purple hues. The nose is intensely fruity, often with a hint of minerality. The most remarkable feature of the vintage is the very fresh balance of both reds and whites, with full-bodied mouthfeel and rich, fine-grained tannic structures. This is undoubtedly a vintage with great ageing potential. 2010 follows in the footsteps of the great vintages of 2000 and 2007. 2010 is Da Capo's 5th vintage and Inspiration's second...

“Comprised of roughly 85% Grenache and the rest Syrah and other permitted varieties, aged all in foudre, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo is sheer perfection in a glass. Wine doesn't get any better. Incredibly rich and concentrated, yet ethereal and even graceful, it boasts off-the-hook aromas of blackberry, licorice, spice-box, smoked meats and underbrush that continue to change and develop in the glass. Massive and decadent on the palate, yet again, with no weight and a seamless texture, this brilliant effort needs a handful of years in the cellar and will live to see its 30th birthday in fine form. Drink 2016-2040.”

Notes Millésime - Pegau

The 2015 vintage at Châteauneuf-du-Pape stands out for its generosity, both in terms of quality and quantity. A hot, dry summer, punctuated by timely rainfall, enabled optimal ripening of the grapes, resulting in a perfectly controlled harvest. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds are characterized by beautiful, deep, dark colors that are already brilliant. Although dominated by black fruits, the aromas remain fresh, a sign of a perfectly ripe harvest. The silky, small-grained tannins are very present, fine and elegant. The wines are well-balanced, full-bodied and fruity, designed to age for many years, but with all the qualities needed to be enjoyed in their prime, as were the 1990, 1998 and 2010 before them. Balanced, complex and accessible, this vintage combines power and elegance, with excellent ageing potential, while remaining very seductive in its youth.

“The tiny production 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Da Capo is a powerhouse and unquestionably one of the top wines in the vintage. Compared to the 2010 by Laurence, it offers a stacked, full-bodied, incredibly concentrated feel as well as a blockbuster bouquet of blackcurrants, tapenade, cured meats, garrigue, and assorted Provençal street market-like aromas and flavors. It doesn't have the sheer volume or flamboyant character of the 2016 (which I think is a better wine) but is deep, straight, and as classic as it gets. Hide bottles for 3-4 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy them over the following 2-3 decades.”

“As I reported last year, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo is impressive. While it's less flamboyantly aromatic than the Cuvée Réservée, it's more powerful and concentrated. Full-bodied and rich, it's loaded with potent raspberry fruit and silky tannins and boasts a finish that won't stop. Hints of roasted meat, lavender and thyme add complexity to the waves of fruit, which wash gently across the palate, exhibiting a lovely soft touch.”

Notes Millésime - Pegau

A fabulous vintage! Ideal weather conditions, with a hot, dry summer and wide temperature variations, enabled the grapes to ripen to perfection, in perfect health. The harvest, spread over several weeks, produced grapes of the highest quality, requiring very little sorting. The wines are distinguished by their aromatic intensity, complexity and purity. The 2016s, for their part, are characterized by very clear, frank, intense and complex aromatic expression. Depending on the terroir, Grenache wines exude fragrances of raspberry, licorice, garrigue, candied ginger, black fruit and citrus. The blending of the appellation's different grape varieties gives rise to a «magical complexity», an expression of the resonance found between varietal typicity and the influence of terroir. Red wines boast dense, dark colors and very high levels of anthocyanins. On the palate, the wines are full-bodied, vinous and beautifully fresh. In a word, powerful! The tannins are very present, their grain extremely fine and already very silky. This vintage combines power, elegance and balance, and is one of the appellation's great years, with excellent ageing potential.

“I was also able to taste the 2016 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Da Capo, which comes mostly from older vines in the La Crau lieu-dit and spends an additional year in a large foudre. The 2016 vintage was truly magical for the region, and this Cuvée Da Capo is unquestionably one of the finest vintages for this cuvée ever made, in the same league as, if not surpassing, the 1998, 2003, 2007, and 2010. Sensational notes of cured meats, crème de cassis, crushed violets, ground pepper, tapenade, truffle, and sweet herbes de Provence all soar from the glass and it hits the palate with a massive, full-bodied style that stays seamless, weightless, and as pure as they come. Traditional, classic Châteauneuf Du Pape doesn't get better. I hate to be the guy who throws out the “best to date” line very often, but this is truly magical stuff.”

“As impressive as the Cuvée Réservée is, the 2016 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée da Capo brings an extra level of intensity. Turn that volume up to 11 or even 12. Waves of black cherries, plums and chocolate wash across the full-bodied, velvety palate, lingering nearly forever on the finish. As big and bold as it is, it remains breathtakingly elegant and fine. It should evolve gracefully through at least 2040.”

“This is richly fruity, with succulent plum, boysenberry and fig preserve flavors that are seamlessly layered and laced with warm anise, black tea and smoldering tobacco notes. The long finish features well-embedded chalky grip that gives this cut to match the lush fruit. A beauty. Best from 2021 through 2040.”

“Opaque bright-rimmed ruby. Potent red fruit liqueur, incense and Moroccan spice aromas on the highly perfumed nose; a smoky mineral element provides lift. Sweet, concentrated and energetic in the mouth, offering intense raspberry liqueur and cherry cola flavors that pick up a smoky nuance with air. The penetrating, floral-dominated finish shows outstanding clarity and thrust, and harmonious tannins add framework and grip.”

Notes Millésime - Pegau

The 2020 vintage is full-bodied and well-balanced, with great ageing potential. It stands out from the powerful 2019 vintage for its balance, freshness and roundness. Marked by an early vegetative cycle and globally favorable climatic conditions - with replenished water reserves, a warm summer without excess and some welcome rain - the year enabled optimal ripening of the grapes. The early, serene harvest took place in excellent sanitary conditions, producing grapes of the highest quality. The wines reveal fresh, elegant profiles: the reds combine finesse, purity of fruit and supple tannins, with aromas ranging from raspberry and garrigue to blackberry, white pepper and menthol. Accessible in its youth while retaining magnificent ageing potential, 2020 is a harmonious vintage, combining deliciousness and balance.
