Spread around 171 villages & six departments : Ardèche, Drôme, Gard, Loire, Rhône and Vaucluse, the Rhône valley is revealed in rich & varied wines following the river from north to south. Among the many players in the Rhône Valley are passionate winegrowers working in the generosity and the production of fine & spicy wines characteristic of the south of France.
The Château Pegau is located 10 minutes north of Avignon and to the south in the continuity of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Along the Rhône, the soils show similarities with Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Terroirs of Côtes-du-Rhône
The Rhône Valley wines are elaborated in four to five types of soils: pebbles with clay, stony, loess and sandy soils offering a diversity and a viticulture adapted to the production of contrasting wines.
Château Pegau is a perfect example of the clay soil and completely covered with pebbles. A flat topography near the Lônes and more hillsides for the Côtes-du-Rhône Villages.
The grape varieties
The appellation authorizes the wine-growers to work with twenty grape varieties, offering Grenache majority wines, bringing roundness & fruit.
We also find in great majority wines of Syrah, Mourvèdre & Cinsault, spicy & sustained.
Château Pegau covers 40 hectares of a classic blend of grape varieties. Planted in 1950 Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre & Cinsault will be the benchmarks for the southernmost expression of Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Village wines from Château Pegau.
As for white wines, the grape varieties are represented by the blending of several types of grapes such as : Grenache blanc, Clairette, Marsanne, Roussanne, Bourboulenc and Viognier allowing an ideal blend of aromas and freshness.
Château Pegau produces a fairly lively and salty white Côtes du Rhône thanks to the blend of 40% de Clairette, 30% de Bourboulenc, 20% de Grenache blanc et 10% de Ugni Blanc.
